SOUTHERN WILLAMETTE VALLEY
Innovation
Corridor Initiative
The Southern Willamette Valley
stands at the edge of a new opportunity.
Anchored by two world-class research universities, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, the region is rich in ideas, talent, and potential. But while other university-anchored regions have surged ahead, ours has not yet fully captured the economic returns of its intellectual engine. Despite rising research capacity and record philanthropic investment, average incomes in this region trail the national average and lag peers like Portland and Bend. The promise is here. What’s missing is the structure to harness it. That’s what the Southern Willamette Valley Innovation Corridor aims to build: a long-term strategy that connects academic innovation with industry momentum, land readiness, and quality of place. One that makes room for new ideas without sacrificing the landscapes and values that define us.

A powerful regional economic vision

The Southern Willamette Valley Innovation Corridor will lead the state in innovation-driven economic growth that is powered by world-class research institutions, strengthened through public-private collaboration, and guided by a commitment to sustainability and shared prosperity.
Through coordinated planning and bold investment, the region will generate a diverse mix of well-paying jobs that empower residents to build fulfilling lives and enable future generations to thrive close to home.

By cultivating local talent, attracting new thinkers and doers, and fostering inclusive economic opportunity, the Corridor will become a magnet for innovation and a model for long-term prosperity while preserving its natural beauty and enriching both urban and rural communities.
Research & Engagement
Project staff will develop a comprehensive engagement plan to coordinate with stakeholders actively working in this space, including committees focused on the following topics:
University innovation partnerships
Community stewardship and quality of life
Business development
Land use and site readiness

The Steering Committee traveled to North Carolina’s Research Triangle in September 2025 to meet with academic and industry leaders behind one of the nation’s most successful research and innovation corridors. The visit offered an opportunity to learn firsthand how the region was established, adapted, and continues to thrive. Insights gained from this trip will inform Oregon’s own approach and will draw inspiration from their successes while tailoring strategies to reflect our state’s unique values,
culture, assets, and constraints.
